Wedding photographers guide to the groom’s preparations

Wedding photographers to the groom's preparations

The last post I wrote concentrated on the bridal preparations and gave an insight to how the girls get ready before the wedding. The spotlight for this post is all on the boys and the groom’s preparations. As a wedding photographer I find I’m asked to photograph the girls more than the boys as we all know a wedding day is all about the bride, right?

Well maybe that’s true but there is a lot of interest in what the groom and groomsmen get up to as well. There might be no hair and make up shots but believe me the men usually take just as much time as the girls in getting their hair just right. Add this to all the little detail shots, such as watches, jewellery and even matching socks and the groom preps can make for some very interesting photos to add to the wedding album.

Can I fit in both the groom and bridal prep?

It’s a tricky one but with a little forward planning then yes you can. It’s very easy to do if both parties are getting ready at the same venue such as a hotel. I can easily nip into each of the rooms in this scenario and get a good range of shots. Of course, most brides and grooms don’t get ready at the same venue so it takes a little planning to get this right. My usual way of doing this would be to start at the groom’s preparation location and photograph for up to an hour before making my way to the bride’s location. As was the case here at Phil’s preps, where he was getting ready in a hotel in Manchester before his Nunsmere Hall wedding in Cheshire.

What if I don’t want a full groom preparation photo session?

Well that’s easy, don’t have one. If you would like a few shots of the groomsmen after they are ready, then it’s good to arrange a time to meet up just after I have finished photographing the bridal preps. These type of shots usually end up being taken in a bar or pub, where else?
