Deaf Institute Wedding Photographer

Gemma & Dan invited me along to be their Deaf Institute wedding photographer and what an amazing day it was. My day started off very early. At 9am I was in the Holiday Inn Express on Oxford Road photographing Gemma and the girls for their bridal preparations. Hair and make up was provided by the very talented Jules Daniels. The weather outside wasn’t really playing ball, especially after the long dry spell we’d all been enjoying. Not to worry though, these girls weren’t going to let a little bit of Manchester drizzle stop them.

Unfortunately Manchester Town Hall is now shut and no wedding ceremonies will be taking place there for around 6 years. Manchester Register Office are now conducting all of the weddings around the corner at Heron House and you can still use the architecture of the exterior of Manchester Town Hall for your wedding photos by taking a two minutes stroll to Albert Square.

This wedding was a little unconventional, the bride and groom weren’t too bothered about the old tradition of not seeing each other before ceremony and had a little chat to each other before going in for the formalities.

Following the ceremony, Gemma & Dan wanted to do a few portraits around the city centre before making their way to the Deaf Institute. The weather was still unkind and the drizzle kept falling but it  was still lovely to walk around the Albert Square area and use the famous arches for a little shelter. We then all jumped in to a taxi and headed off to the reception.

Quirky wedding at The Deaf Institute

The Deaf Institute is a fab old music hall. Gemma & Dan are huge 80’s music fans and every song on the playlist came from that era. I was lucky enough to join them for a beautiful three course wedding breakfast. After the speeches and cake cutting came the party. My word, what a night, smoke machines filled the dance floor and the light effects were amazing. After the first dance, everyone got up to join in the fun.

Housed in a Grade II-listed building, this cool Manchester venue is a real hipster paradise. It was built in 1878 as The Deaf Institute, and was derelict until the current owners undertook a massive refurb project. It’s located just off Oxford Road, in the middle of the Manchester Metropolitan University Campus.

Set over three floors, the main bar is on the ground floor with booths and huge sharing tables. food includes vegan offerings and as you’d expect, the beer comes from local breweries. The music hall is on the first floor and hosts numerous live gigs, comedy & club nights. Lastly, the basement bar is ideal for parties & club nights. All floors are perfect locations for your wedding photography with quirky corners and features and means if it rains, you are still going to get a fab set of wedding photographs
